Dr. Mike and Chris Higgins Celebrated with Community Hero Award
From its first location in Tampa, Florida, Hope Children’s Home has grown to provide critical rescue and care services to children at risk of neglect and abuse in two other areas: Clovis, New Mexico and El Progreso, Honduras. Hope Children’s Home excels thanks to the visionary leadership of executive director Dr. Mike Higgins and Chris Higgins.
In 2016, Dr. Mike and Chris Higgins were honored by the Tampa Bay Lightning as Community Heroes for their selfless dedication to providing a home for children in need. The two received the honor on Jan. 19 during the first period of the game between Tampa Bay Lightning and the Edmonton Oilers. Dr. Mike and Chris Higgins also received a $50,000 donation which they donated to the children’s home. It was used to renovate part of the center’s school.
Dr. Mike and Chris Higgins took over the children’s home more than a decade ago and slowly expanded its family services to reach more children who were at risk. Through their leadership, the home has served more than 400 children from the Tampa Bay area providing them with safe dormitories and cottages to live in and a school to learn at. These structures have been largely successful with about 90 percent of children receiving care attending college.
On top of receiving the Community Hero award, Dr. Mike and Chris Higgins were also featured in a special video celebration aired 10 minutes into the game. The video highlighted the work they have done with children in need over the last couple of years. They also enjoyed a private suite dinner with treats that they shared with some of the children from the home.
